Black Forest AARP making a difference
Members of Black Forest Chapter #1100 of AARP met on Aug. 11 to work on the chapter's annual Make a Difference Day project - to cut, sew and tie throws and lap robes for the veterans or their spouses at the Bruce McCandless Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home in Florence, Colo. When the colorful quilts are finished, they will bear an embroidered message thanking the veteran for his or her service. The quilts will be delivered to the nursing home in October, as the AARP chapter's recognition of the national day of service.

Black Forest AARP ready for celebration
The Black Forest AARP chapter will celebrate 38 years of community service on Sept. 8 at the Lutheran Church in Black Forest. Ice cream and cake will be served after the noon potluck lunch and program. The program for this meeting will be a special presentation by Allison Carver, senior program specialist from the AARP Foundation's ElderWatch. Carver will present an informative and interactive program designed to educate seniors on fraud, scams and ID theft prevention. All members of the community are invited to join the chapter members on this historic date.
The chapter motto is "To Serve, Not to be Served." This motto has guided the membership through many notable community service projects including donations to Care and Share; sponsoring Safe Driving classes; participating in the Tax Aide program; sponsoring heart attack and stroke awareness classes; volunteering at Wolford Elementary School; staffing at boys and girl scouts events; volunteering with Silver Key; and serving as election judges and on local church and community councils.
National AARP has removed the minimum age requirement for becoming a member of AARP, which means any person, regardless of age, can join this chapter and participate in creating good in the community.
The Black Forest chapter meets at noon the second Wednesday of each month at the Lutheran Church, 12455 Black Forest Road, except in March, July, August and October. Included in these four months are an annual picnic and two outings to local buffets. Program speakers or entertainment is included at almost every meeting. Chapter dues are $2 per year. Call 598-2504 or 596-6787 for information on meeting times and dates.
